Charlene Tipene

MĀORI CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Charlene Tipene is a Māori Clinical Psychologist. She completed her training and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Massey University, studying Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). 

Her internship was with Community Mental Health (CMH) at Taranaki Base hospital, before working with the Health Psychology Service; primarily, supporting people with a cancer diagnosis and other long-term health conditions. Her formal training has included early intervention with people with first time experience of psychosis. She has also had opportunity to train within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and the Mental Health Service for Older People (MHSOP).

Charlene takes a holistic and collaborative approach to assessment and treatment. Depending on a person’s unique needs she will draw on a number of approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and elements of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy. 

With the available supervision at Talkingpoint, this is an opportunity for Charlene to increase her expertise in neuropsychological assessment. She is working towards additional registration as a neuropsychologist. 

Charlene lives in New Plymouth with her partner and their children and enjoys having spare time. Her whakapapa is to Ngāti Hine and Ngāpuhi.
